Rail Electrification Works - Packages 9 & 10

HOCHTIEF are currently delivering the design and construction of Packages 9 & 10 bridge works along the Great Western Mainline.

The project comprises of railway bridge demolition/construction and parapet works to create clearance for Overhead Line Electrification (OLE) equipment, for the electrification and upgrade of the existing rail line.

Works effecting the operation or safety of the existing railway infrastructure will be carried out during possessions. These include Rules of the Route access on Monday to Thursday, and Saturday nights, and longer abnormal possessions at certain weekends and bank holidays.

Particular challenges on the project that the HOCHTIEF team will proactively manage include:

  • Ecological constraints including the management of protected species
  • Delivery of the works with minimal disruption to adjacent road network and utility services
  • Stakeholder and Community communication
  • Logistical planning in remote and built up areas
  • Limited access to the railway lineside and adjacent areas
  • Tie ins to existing structure to be in keeping with existing materials
  • Interfaces with other delivery units
  • Adaptations to the bridge design requirements during the design phase to accommodate programme and project changes
