Reading Station Area Redevelopment (RSAR)

HOCHTIEF and Costain are working in Joint Venture on the £80 million station project. The station works are part of Network Rail’s wider Reading Station Area Regeneration (RSAR) Programme. The RSAR programme will not only substantially upgrade the existing station it will also remodel the track and signalling on the approaches. This will greatly increase its capacity and allow it to cater for predicted passenger numbers up to 2035.

Work involves the reconstruction of the station platforms, the construction of two new large station entrances and a 30m wide passenger transfer deck. At the completion of our work in February 2014 the station will have 15 platforms, with 9 of them being through platforms.

The package of works includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Construction of a retaining structure between Vastern Road and Caversham Road railway bridges on the north side of the station
  • Construction of 5 new platform faces
  • Alterations to existing platforms, including widening and infilling and compliance to Network Rail standards
  • Construction of 1 new terminal platform and lengthening of 2 existing terminal platforms
  • Construction of a transfer deck, including lifts, stairs and escalators to provide access between platforms 7 to 15
  • Construction of a new Northern Entrance building
  • Construction of a new Western Gateline building
  • Attendance on Automatic Gateline Equipment installer
  • Alterations within and extension to existing station subway, changing its use to a non-fare paying passenger route
  • Installation of drainage (buildings and track)
  • Replacement of existing canopies and construction of new canopies
  • Construction of various platform buildings
  • Installation of track formation on northern side of station
  • Removal of existing station footbridge
  • Demolition of existing buildings
  • Works to associated services (gas, water electricity (HV and LV)) and systems (PA, VA, CIS, CCTV, Fire Alarm, Security) within the station area
  • Renumbering of existing platforms

All this work will be delivered whilst maintaining the existing station operations.
